Volta ao Algarve 2025: Renewed Route promises more Emotion and Challenge

The 51st Volta ao Algarve, taking place from February 19 to 23, 2025, promises an even more competitive and thrilling sporting spectacle. With a revamped route, the race will include, for the first time, a decisive time trial finish at Alto do Malhão and an innovative stage ending in Faro. Additionally, the climb to Alto da Fóia, in Monchique, will be more challenging than ever, making this edition one of the most demanding in recent years.


The Renewed Route: What to Expect in 2025

The 51st edition of the Volta ao Algarve stands out with an innovative course that keeps the excitement alive until the final day:

Stage 1 – Portimão → Lagos (190 km):
The race kicks off in the riverside area of Portimão on February 19. Cyclists will tackle 190 kilometers, finishing on the Avenida dos Descobrimentos in Lagos, where a thrilling sprint battle is anticipated.

Stage 2 – A First-Time Finish in Faro:
A completely new stage concludes in the Algarve's capital, Faro, bringing a fresh twist to the event. This finish could prove decisive for riders aiming to shine before the mountain challenges.

Stage 3 – Tavira → Alto da Fóia (Monchique):
The iconic climb to Alto da Fóia (902 meters) in Monchique becomes even more demanding this year, with a route that will test the best climbers. This stage will be crucial for the general classification contenders.

Stage 4 – Medium-Mountain Course:
A varied stage with rolling terrain, perfect for bold attacks and breakaways that might catch the peloton off guard.

Stage 5 – Individual Time Trial at Alto do Malhão (Loulé):
For the first time in Volta ao Algarve history, the climb to Alto do Malhão will feature an individual time trial. This innovative stage promises to decide the race winner, demanding endurance and strategy to the very last meter.

The 2025 Volta ao Algarve will, as always, feature some of the top teams from the international peloton:

WorldTour Teams: Leading global teams like INEOS Grenadiers, Jumbo-Visma, UAE Team Emirates, and Soudal Quick-Step are confirmed.

Continental and Portuguese Teams: National squads such as W52-FC Porto, Efapel, and Glassdrive-Q8-Anicolor are ready to challenge cycling’s biggest names.
