General
What makes AlgarveCycling unique?
At AlgarveCycling we combine premium bikes, deep local knowledge, and seamless service to create unforgettable cycling experiences. We stand out for quality and for our personal approach: every rider gets a bike fitted to their measurements, routes adapted to their level, and flexible logistics that make the holiday stress-free. With our Biosphere Certification, we also commit to responsible and sustainable tourism in the Algarve.
Where are you located?
Our office is in Faro, just a few minutes from the airport and city centre. This is where we welcome clients, manage our fleet, and coordinate our services. You can find the address and contact details here.
Do you offer bike delivery and pickup for rentals?
Yes. We can deliver your rental bike directly to your hotel, villa, or holiday apartment anywhere in the Algarve, and arrange collection at the end of your rental. Delivery and pickup fees vary depending on location, and we will confirm the exact cost when you book. For more details, please review our Terms and Conditions.
What types of cycling tours do you offer?
We offer a wide range of tours designed for different cycling styles and interests. Leisure tours focus on relaxed rides with time to enjoy the scenery, road cycling tours are aimed at riders looking for challenging routes and climbs, while our gravel and MTB tours explore off-road tracks and trails. In addition, we design customised tours, perfect for anyone who wants to combine cycling with cultural encounters, local gastronomy, or unique routes shaped entirely around their wishes. All tours are available as self-guided or guided, giving you the choice between flexibility and full support.
What’s the difference between a self-guided and guided holiday?
On a self-guided tour, you explore at your own pace with the help of our tour documents and GPS routes. It is a flexible option, ideal for independent travellers who still want the comfort of pre-arranged accommodation and luggage transfers.
On a guided tour, one of our experienced local guides rides with the group, providing navigation, technical support, and highlights along the route. Guided tours often include extras such as organised lunches and give you the chance to share the journey with other cyclists.
Are your tours suitable for all fitness levels?
Yes. We offer tours at different levels of difficulty - some are designed for easy, relaxed cycling, while others are more challenging and best suited for experienced riders. The key is to pick the tour that matches your fitness and expectations, so you and your fellow riders can enjoy the experience fully. If you are not sure which option is right for you, just get in touch and we will help you choose the tour that fits you best.
Are your services suitable for solo travellers?
Absolutely! Many cyclists join us solo, and we make sure both guided and self-guided tours are ideal options. On guided tours you will enjoy the camaraderie of a group, while self-guided tours are perfect if you value freedom and flexibility with none of the logistical hassle. Either way, you can count on us to make your trip smooth, safe, and memorable.
What size of group can I expect if I join a group tour?
Our guided tours are guaranteed with a minimum of 6 participants, so you can always count on having at least fellow riders to share the experience with. Group sizes are kept deliberately small to ensure a more personal atmosphere and smoother logistics, though on popular departures groups may grow to around 15 people. If you would like to know the expected group size for a specific trip, our team will be happy to advise. In rare cases, the minimum or maximum numbers may be adjusted.
How do I know which rental bike is right for me?
At AlgarveCycling we make sure every rider has the right bike, which is why we offer a broad selection of options. Trekking and touring bikes are the go-to choice for most leisure cyclists, while e-bikes give an extra push when needed. Road bikes are available for those who want speed and endurance, and gravel or mountain bikes are perfect for exploring off-road trails. Each type is explained on our website so you can see exactly what suits your trip. If you are unsure, simply tell us a bit about yourself and we will guide you toward the best match.
Do you provide child seats or trailers?
Yes, child seats and trailers are available for rent and can easily be added when you book your bikes. Please note that child seats cannot be mounted on all bike types, so we recommend contacting us in advance to check compatibility. Since numbers are limited, we also advise reserving early.
Can I bring my own bike on the tour?
You are welcome to bring your own bike. Just make sure it is in good condition and suited to the terrain of your chosen tour. If you prefer, we also provide high-quality rental bikes that are serviced before every ride and come with roadside support. Renting avoids the hassle of transporting your own bike and is a great way to try out an e-bike or another model you may not own.
How safe and cycling friendly is the Algarve?
Cycling in the Algarve is generally safe and very enjoyable, with a wide variety of quiet backroads, scenic secondary roads, rural lanes, cycle paths, and off road sections depending on the route and type of tour. We design all our routes with safety and overall riding quality in mind, making use of lower traffic roads and calmer areas whenever feasible.
That said, some routes may include sections shared with cars and other road users, particularly in areas where dedicated cycling infrastructure is limited. Conditions can vary depending on the region and route, and you may occasionally encounter rougher terrain, gravel, uneven pavement, steeper gradients, narrower roads, or temporary changes caused by bad weather or road works. While we do our best to monitor and account for route and road condition changes where reasonably possible, unexpected situations may occasionally arise.
We therefore always recommend riding attentively, adapting your speed and riding style to the local conditions, and complying with the local Highway Code as well as any guidance provided by AlgarveCycling staff or guides.
Bike theft can occasionally occur in urban areas and popular touristic places, so we advise using a lock (provided with our rentals) and avoiding leaving bicycles unattended outdoors overnight.
What’s the weather like in Portugal, and when is the best time for cycling?
The Algarve offers excellent conditions for cycling, with more than 300 days of sunshine a year and mild temperatures compared to most of Europe. April, May, June, September and October are the most ideal months for a cycling holiday. In spring and autumn, the weather is typically warm but comfortable, although there is always a chance of experiencing some rain. Winter can also be very pleasant for cycling, with many sunny days and daytime temperatures often above 15°C. July and August are the hottest months, when early morning rides are best to avoid the midday heat.
Should I get travel insurance?
AlgarveCycling strongly recommends that you obtain travel insurance to cover unforeseen events such as cancellations or medical emergencies on and off the bike. In addition, we offer a selection of insurance packages that can be booked in connection with a bicycle rental. When you book a cycling holiday with a rental bike, an extended level of insurance is already included, and you have the option to upgrade further if you wish. Our team is happy to help you choose the solution that best fits your needs.

In addition to our scheduled tours, we create Custom Tours that are built entirely around your ideas and interests. Whether you dream of scenic coastal rides, culinary highlights, historic towns, or off-the-beaten-path adventures, we can design an itinerary that reflects exactly what you are looking for. From the type of routes and accommodation to group size and bike choice, every detail can be tailored to your wishes. Learn more and start planning your adventure here.
Please note that in order to begin the planning process, a Tour Development Fee of 250 € applies, covering the initial consultation, route design, and coordination involved in creating your itinerary. In cases of more complex itineraries or specific requirements, a different or additional fee may apply.
What kind of equipment do you offer?
In addition to our high-quality rental bikes, we offer a wide selection of extras to make your ride more convenient and comfortable. Options include different pedals, luggage solutions such as panniers or baskets, GPS devices and family accessories like child seats or trailers. All extras can be selected during the booking process, and our team is happy to recommend the most suitable setup for your trip. Please note that at the moment we do not provide clothing or shoes, so we recommend bringing the gear you feel most comfortable riding in.
Can I request specific GPX files for my own trip?
We want you to make the most of your time on the bike. Adding GPX routes to your rental gives you the chance to follow carefully prepared tracks that highlight the best of the Algarve, from scenic stretches to authentic local spots. Share your ideas with us, and we will create routes that suit your riding style and make your cycling experience even more rewarding.
What's included in the tour packages?
Our tour packages are designed to give you a complete, worry-free cycling experience. They typically include accommodation with breakfast in carefully selected hotels, daily luggage transfers, and on-tour support to keep everything running smoothly. You will also receive detailed route information along with digital tracks to guide your rides.
Depending on the tour, optional extras such as airport transfers, meal or room upgrades can be added. Full details of what is included and which extras are available are provided in the description of each tour.
What types of accommodation are used on bike holidays?
Our aim is to provide a welcoming and pleasant atmosphere after a day of cycling, with accommodations chosen for their comfort and character. Depending on the tour and route, this can range from 5-star spa hotels to 4- and 3-star hotels, as well as typical Portuguese guesthouses that offer an authentic touch of local hospitality. All are carefully selected partners we work with regularly to ensure quality and consistency.
How does the luggage transfer service work for bike tours?
With AlgarveCycling’s luggage transfer service, you can focus entirely on the ride while we take care of your bags. On arrival, we can collect your luggage directly at the airport and deliver it to your first hotel. During your tour, your belongings are transported from hotel to hotel, so they are waiting for you at the end of each stage. The service is reliable, flexible, and tailored to your itinerary, giving you the freedom to enjoy each day on the bike without the weight of extra bags. Find out more details here.
What are your payment terms and payment options?
For cycling holidays, a booking is confirmed upon receipt of an advance payment of 250 € per person.
The remaining balance is due as follows:
For Individual Tours, the balance is due 30 days before the start date for bookings of 1 to 4 rooms, and 90 days before the start date for bookings of 5 rooms or more.
For Custom Tours, the balance is due 60 days before the start date for bookings of 1 to 4 rooms, and 90 days before the start date for bookings of 5 rooms or more.

For bike rentals, a booking is confirmed with an advance payment of 50% of the total rental cost. The remaining balance is due 30 days before the rental start date.
Payments can be made by bank transfer or credit card. All prices are in Euros and include VAT. Any transaction fees, particularly for international or foreign currency transfers, are the responsibility of the traveller.
What is your policy for cancellation and postponement?
You may cancel or postpone a booking at any time before the start date. Cancellations must always be made in writing, and the applicable fees vary depending on the type of booking (cycling holiday or bike rental) and on how far in advance the cancellation is made. For full details, please refer to our Terms & Conditions.
Bookings can be transferred to another person who meets the booking conditions; in that case, no cancellation compensation applies.
For how long can I rent a bike?
The rental period is calculated in full 24-hour blocks, starting from the agreed delivery or pickup time. Hourly rentals are not available. Any extension is counted as an additional full day.
When can I collect and return my rental bike?
Bikes can be collected and returned during our shop opening hours, Monday to Saturday from 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM. On special request, you may collect your bike the evening before the rental start date, but this is subject to availability and cannot be guaranteed.
Preparing for Your Ride
Do I need to arrange my own travel to Portugal?
Flights are not included in our cycling holidays, so you are free to choose the travel options that suit you best in terms of price and convenience. If you would like advice, our team is happy to guide you on the most suitable connections to help you plan with confidence.
What should I wear and bring for a cycling tour?
We recommend lightweight, comfortable clothing that allows you to move freely, along with cycling shoes or sturdy sports shoes. Do not forget essentials such as sunscreen, a water bottle, and any personal items you may need. For cycling holidays, please check your travel documents for additional recommendations.
Can I bring my own pedals and saddle?
Our bikes come with standard flat pedals as the default setup, but we also offer a wide selection of pedal options, including clip-ins. If you prefer, you are welcome to bring your own pedals or saddle, and our team will install them for you at the start of your rental or tour. For clip-in pedals, please remember to bring the matching shoes and make sure you are comfortable riding with them.
When will I receive the travel documents for my cycling holiday?
Once the final payment has been received, your booking is fully confirmed and we will send your travel documents by email. Please remember to check your spam folder to make sure nothing gets lost. At the start of your tour, a member of our team will give you a detailed briefing and provide a Welcome Folder with all key documents, luggage tags, and printed copies of the most important information.
What’s included in the digital and printed travel documents?
Your travel documents cover everything you need for a smooth trip. They include descriptions of your daily stages, recommended sights and stops, a list of your hotels, and any extras you have booked such as transfers. You will also find safety tips, a code of conduct, GPS routes for navigation, and a link to your personal Google Map with our favorite scenic highlights, restaurants, and hidden gems across the Algarve. Printed copies of the most important information are provided in your Welcome Folder at the start of the tour.
How do I receive GPS Data?
When booking a tour, the GPS data comes in GPX format and is sent to you by email along with your travel documents. You can download the files to your device so they are ready for your rides. If you use a phone, a navigation app is required - we recommend Guru Maps, which is free and simple to install. Instructions are included in your travel documents. We suggest loading the routes before you arrive, and if you have questions at any point, our team will happily guide you through the setup.
Is there a welcome meeting at the start of my cycling holiday?
About a week before your tour begins, we will contact you by email to schedule a Welcome Meeting. This meeting usually takes place at our shop in Faro or directly at your hotel and lasts 30-60 minutes. During the session, our staff will give you an overview of your tour, go through your routes and highlights, provide printed documents such as luggage tags, and answer any questions you may have. A technical and safety briefing for your bikes is also included, covering topics like e-bike handling and what to do in case of an emergency. If anything remains unclear afterward, our team is always available to assist you.
Can I bring my non-cyclist family, friends or kids along?
Family members or friends who do not ride can still book the same package as cyclists, covering accommodation, meals, and luggage transfers at the regular price. Since our logistics are focused on the riders, we cannot provide separate support or transfers for non-cyclists. While you are out on the bike, your companions can enjoy the destinations, hotels, and local culture, and our team will gladly suggest options to make their stay more enjoyable.
Can I arrive before or stay longer after my cycling holiday?
Arriving a little earlier or staying longer after your cycling holiday is a great way to make the most of your trip. Extra time gives you the chance to unwind, enjoy more of the Algarve, or discover destinations that are not part of the cycling routes. We will be glad to help you arrange additional nights or plan an extension tailored to your needs.
On the Bike
Are the route details shown on your website reliable?
The route descriptions and online maps on our website are intended to give you a clear overview of each tour. Elevation data may vary slightly depending on the GPS system used, but we do our best to check all routes and keep the information up to date. Occasionally, small adjustments to the exact route or stage locations may be necessary, for example due to local conditions, but these do not affect the overall character of the tour.
What measures do you take regarding safety on your tours?
Safety is our top priority. All riders receive a briefing before the tour, and our routes are designed with safety in mind, making use of cycle paths, quiet backroads, and traffic-calmed areas wherever suitable. Rental bikes are thoroughly checked and adjusted for each rider to guarantee reliability and comfort. Our routes are regularly reviewed to help ensure safe and enjoyable riding conditions. Despite our best efforts to monitor and account for developments wherever reasonably possible, unexpected changes relating to route conditions, weather, traffic situations, road works, and other external factors may occasionally arise. On guided tours, our experienced guides accompany the group on the road, adding an extra level of safety and support throughout the ride.
How can I make sure my bike is properly adjusted for me?
When making your booking, you will be asked to provide your height so we can select the right bike size for you. For road and gravel bikes, we also send a detailed bike fit form that collects your exact measurements to ensure the best possible fit. At the start of your rental or tour, our team will fine-tune the bike on site, adjusting the saddle height, handlebars, and other key settings so everything is tailored to your comfort before you set off.
Which side are the brakes set up on?
All of our rental bikes are set up with European-style brakes, meaning the left lever controls the front brake and the right lever controls the rear brake. Please note that we are not able to swap the brake setup.
What is the range of your e-bikes?
The range of an e-bike depends on several factors, including the terrain, the support mode selected, rider weight, riding style, and external conditions such as wind or temperature. If you would like to know more about the expected range or which bike model is the best fit for your plans, please contact us directly and our team will be glad to advise you.
What tools and accessories are provided with the bike?
All of our bikes come with a basic repair kit containing an inner tube, tyre levers, and a multi-tool, as well as an air pump. If you would like to customise your setup further, you can add accessories during the booking process. Options include for example CO2 inflators, different pedal systems, panniers, GPS devices, and family equipment such as child seats and trailers.
Is a lock included with rental bikes?
All rental bikes come with a lock so you can secure them whenever needed. We ask that you always store your bike securely and keep it locked, particularly at night. During the rental period you are responsible for the bike, and in the event of theft you would be liable for the cost of replacement.
Do I have to wear a helmet?
We strongly advise all riders to wear a helmet and suitable protective accessories in line with the local Highway Code recommendations. For safety reasons, we ask that guests wear a helmet whenever they are on the bike. You can either bring your own helmet or request one from us during the booking process.
Do I need to be an experienced cyclist to join a tour or rent a bike?
You do not need to be a professional cyclist, but you should feel comfortable riding a bike and handling the basics, such as braking, shifting gears, and riding on different road surfaces. Our tours are designed for a wide range of ability levels, and we will help you choose the route that best suits your experience. Before you set off, our team gives you a full bike briefing and makes sure your bike is adjusted properly. If you are unfamiliar with features such as gear shifting or e-bike settings, we are happy to show you how everything works so you can ride with confidence.
What happens if I get a puncture?
You do not need to be a skilled mechanic to rent a bike or join one of our tours, but a basic understanding of how a bike works is always helpful. All rental bikes are supplied with the essentials for small fixes, such as a multitool, spare tube, tyre levers, and a pump, so you can deal with simple issues like a puncture.
To make things even easier, we have prepared a short tutorial video showing how to fix a puncture on an e-bike:
What if I need help with a mechanical issue during my ride?
Support is available from the beginning to the end of your tour or rental through our emergency contact number. If any mechanical issues occur during your trip, please contact AlgarveCycling before attempting repairs or replacements. Major repairs must not be carried out independently or through third-party services without our authorisation, and we cannot reimburse unauthorised expenses or parts. In case a breakdown prevents you from continuing, we offer Roadside Bike Assistance under the conditions set out in our Terms & Conditions.
What happens if I fall behind or get off track?
For self-guided cycling holidays you will receive detailed travel documents and GPS tracks to help you stay on course. If you are renting a bike, GPX routes can be added to your booking as an extra, giving you reliable navigation support for your own trip. And if you ever need additional help, our team is only a phone call away. On guided holidays, our experienced guides make sure no one is left behind, so you can simply enjoy the ride at your own pace.
How sustainable is a cycling holiday with AlgarveCycling?
Cycling is one of the most eco-friendly ways to travel, and we are committed to making your holiday as responsible as possible. AlgarveCycling is Biosphere-certified, which means we follow recognised sustainability standards in the way we design our tours, choose our partners, and operate day to day. By travelling with us, you are supporting responsible tourism and helping to protect the Algarve’s landscapes and communities.
What can I do to travel more sustainably during my trip?
Cycling holidays are already one of the most sustainable ways to explore a region, and with a few conscious choices you can make your impact even more positive. Choosing to travel in winter, spring or autumn not only means quieter roads and more comfortable riding conditions, it also helps ease pressure on the Algarve during the busy summer months. On two wheels you have the freedom to discover inland villages, local heritage, and artisan traditions that often remain unseen by mass tourism. Supporting family-run cafés and shops along the way strengthens the communities you pass through, while simple habits like using a reusable water bottle and respecting marked cycle paths help protect the natural environment. For more inspiration, visit our blog or follow us on social media, where we share stories and tips about sustainable travel and responsible cycling in the Algarve.
