Overview
Description
Would you like to spend your holiday in the sunny south not only on a fantastic beach but also doing something for your fitness?
Then we'll let you in on perhaps the most famous secret in Europe: the ALGARVE - spoilt by the sun and blessed with an exceptionally varied and fascinating landscape.
A marvelously beautiful coastline, a hilly, mountainous hinterland, the "Serra", a sparsely built-up area with stretches of land that have remained natural and in between a fertile plain with citrus plantations, orange groves, and vineyards.
Good roads up into the Serra offer a great opportunity to test or improve your fitness from your accommodation.
Some of the routes run along roads where the annual "Volta ao Algarve" takes place, featuring the world's best cycling stars.
Itinerary
Individual arrival and check-in at the hotel. Personal welcome, travel briefing, handover and adjustment of the bikes according to your wishes by Algarve Cycling.
Your journey starts with a cosy warm-up as you head towards the sea. Pedalling through the Ria Formosa nature reserve, you'll pass along lagoons and salt fields where the renowned "Flor do Sal" salt is harvested. Your route then leads you to the charming town of Tavira, often referred to as the "Venice of the Algarve." From there, you continue on a road that gradually ascends past Santa Catarina and along the "Rota da Cortiça" (Cork Route) up to São Bras. To conclude the tour, you'll enjoy a rapid descent down to your accommodation.
The tour begins at your hotel and heads towards Estoi, continuing through Stª Barbara de Nexe until you reach the market town of Loulé. The route to this point is largely flat, but after Loulé, you face a gentle ascent stretching 20 km and gaining 200 meters in elevation. Initially, you will cycle through a rural landscape dotted with orange plantations, then into wooded areas filled with cork oak, pine, eucalyptus, and olive trees. The route then takes you via Querença to Barranco do Velho, reaching the tour's highest point at 500 meters above sea level. After this, you embark on a long, steep descent towards São Bras. The tour concludes with a ride back over a chain of hills to your hotel.
Starting from Estoi, you'll take a long, winding road to São Bras. From there, the route ascends through an area rich with cork oaks to Barranco do Velho. Continuing, it traverses three hills through the Serra to reach Cachopo, the furthest point of the route. From Cachopo, you descend into the river valley of the "Ribeira de Alportel". This valley is crossed with a steep descent followed by a challenging climb. Just before you complete the hill after crossing the valley, you'll veer off the road to Tavira and turn right towards "Alcaria do Cume". The subsequent kilometers feature constant ups and downs through the "Serra", offering expansive views over the rolling hills and toward the coast. Afterwards, the route predominantly descends, leading you on a good road through the Barrocal area back to your accommodation.
Today's journey starts with a mix of ups and downs as you pass through the villages of Estói, Corotelo, São Romão, and Amendoeira, eventually joining the road to Barranco do Velho. Leaving behind the populated areas, you enter the largely uninhabited hill country of the Serra. Here, you'll ride on a very quiet and well-maintained road, embarking on a long, gradual climb through cork oak woods and a pristine river valley. After reaching a hilly summit, you'll continue along it for a few kilometers before a thrilling downhill ride returns you to more populated areas. The route continues on side roads through typical Portuguese villages, presenting a mix of terrains, from flat stretches to hilly and steep climbs, including gradients of up to 20%, as well as rewarding downhill sections. The final stretch is flat, leading you straight back to your hotel near Pechão.
Today, you'll dive back into the hilly, mountainous terrain of the Serra, where steep gradients of 20 percent and more await. Starting from Loulé, the route takes you through two river valleys before ascending to Ameixial. From there, you'll head back towards the sea, but not before tackling another 10-kilometer climb to the highest point of the tour at 580 meters. After reaching this peak, the remainder of the route offers a mostly enjoyable descent.
First, you head to Loulé, travelling through the fertile Barrocal region where pasturelands dotted with fruit trees alternate with large vegetable plantations. Next, you'll arrive at the small town of Paderne, notable for its ancient castle ruins dating back to Moorish times. From Paderne, the route steadily climbs uphill to Alte, renowned as one of the most picturesque towns in the Algarve, celebrated for its charming white houses. From Alte, you'll take a mountain road offering expansive views of the coastal area to Benafim. Here, you begin a swift descent through two river valleys down to the "Ribeira de Algibre". You'll follow this river, then tackle a steep ascent to "Corotelo", which is followed by another long descent to Estoi and finally back to your hotel.
Individual departure or extension.

Dropped seatstays with thin tubing absorbs road shocks and vibrations.
