MTB Trans-Algarve Hinterland Algarviana Tour 3.18
MTB paradise
What would you like to do next?
Overview
The routes are varied from flat to mountainous, with very steep climbs and descents in between. The route is mostly on MTB trails, partly also on natural roads. The good condition required. Stage too short or too long? No problem - we are happy to adapt it!
Description
Discover the somewhat different Algarve!
In the middle of the pristine hilly hinterland to the wild Atlantic west coast...
Fat 300 km in 6 stages from the Spanish border to the most southwestern point of Europe, the "Cabo de São Vicente". First 5 stages through the hardly inhabited hilly "Serra", a seemingly endless sea of hills. Cork oak forests, eucalyptus, and pine groves alternate with open terrain of low bushes such as broom, cistus, and medronho bushes. The air is aromatized by wild thyme, sage, and rosemary. In the middle of evergreen river valleys, passing lonely reservoirs, here and there a flock of sheep or goats. Then the contrast - the last stage directly along the west coast in the nature reserve of the "Costa Vicentina". Unique flora and fauna as well as rare animal species have their refuge here. Miles of beautifully situated, lonely sandy beaches combined with wildly foaming sea on the rugged cliffs that drop steeply to the Atlantic and lonely bays. Biking in pure nature! This bike tour leaves nothing to be desired!
Itinerary
Individual arrival and check-in at the hotel. Personal welcome, travel briefing, handover and adjustment of the bikes according to your wishes by Algarve Cycling.
In the morning transfer to Azinhal, near the Spanish border to the tour start. A well-maintained road with little traffic leads through an avenue, out through the village towards the border river Guadiana. It goes into the Serra do Caldeirão, the hilly, lonely hinterland. From a hill, you can already see the small, pretty village of Odeleite, with the deep blue reservoir behind it. The route leads along the lake for a few kilometers...Pure nature! On very good roads with little traffic, you cycle through the deserted landscape, the roads lined with low bushes such as broom and rockrose. In the spring a single sea of flowers. Again and again, you pass small hamlets with whitewashed, mostly uninhabited houses. The route climbs gently towards Vaqueros, where we will spend the night
Today's stage is characterized by constant uphill and downhill. The landscape changes. Spruce, almond, eucalyptus trees, many different types of bushes, and medronho trees line the path. The quiet village of Cachopo, with its original character, is located in the middle of the Serra. The route leads through dense, spicy-scented spruce groves, over hilltops from which breathtaking views of the coastal area and the sea of hills of the Serra can be seen again and again. After Castelão, the route leads down to the small river Ribeira de Odeleite, which is crossed on an adventurous stone bridge. Along the river bank, you cycle in the shade of lush vegetation. The route continues uphill to the village of Parizes and then along the "Rota de Cortiça", a stretch lined with cork oaks, to Barranco do Velho, the end of today's stage.
On a beautiful panoramic path on a range of hills, with spectacular views of the coastal area, we climb up to a quaint old windmill. The subsequent descent, along the Salir stream, ends on a high trail. Continuing in a steady uphill and downhill towards the villages of Salir and Benafim. Through the beautiful river valley of the "Ribeira de Alte," you cycle to the town of Alte, one of the most beautiful places in the Algarve. Passing a spring with a picnic area, you will cycle through the town on narrow cobblestone streets. Passing orange plantations and the typical Algarve trees such as carob, figs, and almonds, the tour leads to São Bartholomeu de Messines, today's stage end. The accommodation is located in a renovated building from the 16th century, in which there is also a restaurant.
Right after the start, you will climb a hill with a magnificent view of the deep blue reservoir "Barragem do Funcho", embedded in the green hills of the Serra. After a short relaxing descent through a beautiful valley, you will reach a winding lakeside path lined with lush vegetation of broom, rockrose, and medron bushes. On this path, you follow the lake to the end of the dam wall, which you cross there, and in a steep descent you reach the next, equally idyllically situated reservoir, the "Barragem do Arade". Again along the shore and then on single trails through the middle of the valley of the Ribeira de Odeluca into a hilly, forested area. Through an evergreen, shady valley you will reach today's stage destination, the spa town of Caldas do Monchique. The spa is located at the foot of the highest mountain in the Algarve, Foia.
The enchanting village of Monchique, which is reached right after the start, is the only village on the whole tour until Aljezur. It is situated between the two highest mountains of the Algarve the Foia with 902 and the Picota with 723 m.a.s.l. After this passage, the route leads through the almost uninhabited, natural, and hilly "Serra de Monchique". Lush vegetation with terraced fields of vegetables or citrus fruits and pastures characterize the area here. The route leads on great single trails to the west and you reach the nature reserve "Costa Vicentina" in a seamless transition. An 80km long and 5km wide protected coastal strip, which provides a habitat for a unique variety of protected animal and plant species. Shortly before the end of the stage, you will reach one of the most beautiful beaches on the west coast, the "Praia da Amoreira", framed by high black rocks and in the middle of the lagoon area of the river "Ribeiro Aljezur", along which you will drive until Aljezur.
The tour starts with a ride through the old town, over a castle hill to the village of Carrapateira, which is located in a vast dune area on a hill. Now an unforgettably beautiful cycling route awaits you! The tour leads along rocky cliffs, with fantastic views over the deep blue Atlantic, and past two sandy bays, the "Praia da Bordeira" and the "Praia do Amado". Afterward, we will pass through an evergreen landscape with macchia. A steep path leads to the mostly deserted bay "Praia da Barriga" and then to the "Praia da Cordoama". Both are surrounded by high cliffs. At low tide, you can even ride your bike directly on the beach from bay to bay and save yourself the crossing of the hilltop. Spectacular impressions! Afterward, we continue over a steppe-like plateau to the most southwestern point of Europe, with a lighthouse high above the cliffs. On a beautiful coastal road, we reach Sagres. A legendary place, where the maritime school was located, where the best sailors of Portugal were trained, who later discovered the oceans of the world.
