Treat yourself to a short break in a sunny region and experience an unforgettable bike tour along one of the most beautiful coasts in Europe. In just 64 km and with only 2 stages, you will leave the stress of everyday life behind and immerse yourself in the beauty and diversity of the Eastern Algarve. The bike tour takes you through the charming towns of Tavira and Olhão, both known for their historic buildings and traditional markets, and depending on your arrival time, you can also explore the capital of the Algarve, Faro. The Eastern Algarve is a region full of contrasts and offers something for everyone. The bike tour takes you through rolling hills and picturesque villages, along the coast with its endless sandy beaches and through the fascinating lagoon landscape of the Ria Formosa Nature Reserve. Allowing you to connect with nature, appreciate its wonders firsthand, and revel in the diversity that the Eastern Algarve has to offer.
Itinerary
Welcome to the Algarve!
We will greet you either on your day of arrival or, if it falls outside our business hours or on a public holiday, on the first day of your cycling tour. At the welcome meeting, we will perfectly adjust your bike and provide you with all the essential information for your journey.
This is the moment your Algarve adventure truly begins – with comfort, confidence, and a smile.
On the second day, you start with a relaxed train ride to Vila Real de Santo António, the starting point of your tour. From there, cycle down the palm-lined waterfront promenade of the Guadiana River towards the sea. You then cycle pass picturesque pine forests, fragrant citrus and vine plantations and the historic town of Cacela Velha. This small town with its white houses and an old fort sits majestically on a cliff above the sea. Here begins the world-famous nature reserve "Ria Formosa", which impresses with its large mussel fields and salt pools. You will cross this area on beautifully laid out cycle paths and finally reach Tavira, where you will spend the night. The historic town has preserved its unique character over the centuries and invites you to take a leisurely stroll. Tavira is a town with an oriental flair, characterised by "scissor" or hipped roofs and lattice doors made of woven wood, a legacy of the Arabs. The town is criss-crossed by a maze of narrow streets and white houses, and offers great vantage points and leisure opportunities with the Jardim do Coreto green area and the Torre do Castelo tower.
On the third day of the tour, you cycle from Tavira to Olhão. With the refreshing sea breeze in your face, the route follows idyllic cycle paths along the Atlantic coast, passing the charming fishing village of Santa Luzia and Pedras d'El Rei. Upon arrival in Olhão, you reach one of the Algarve’s most important fishing ports, where the town’s strong maritime character can still be felt today. At the entrance to the town, an informative interpretation centre introduces the natural and cultural heritage of the region. Olhão’s unique atmosphere is best appreciated from the tower of the parish church, overlooking the characteristic white houses with their traditional “açoteias” terrace roofs. Stroll through the old town, enjoy the seafood specialities the town is famous for, and take in the lively atmosphere of the harbour and waterfront promenade.
